Updated: 8-Year-Old Struck By Utility Vehicle at State Fair, Has Broken Leg

An eight-year-old girl from Engleman Elementary School in Grand Island was injured Monday when she was struck by a Utility Terrain Vehicle at the Nebraska State Fair.

The Nebraska State Patrol is calling it a tragic accident.

The Gator was being driven by a state fair employee, and both the driver and a passenger report they looked behind them before backing up the utility vehicle.

Authorities say the girl was running to catch up with her class -- which was at the fair as part of the Nebraska's Largest Classroom program -- when the vehicle hit her and broke her leg.

Fair officials say they have a driving policy for staff, which they will re-evaluate after the fair.
