Additional Housing Helps Boost Rural Tax Base
Every community deals with taxes, but rural economies may struggle more than others.
Hayes Center is an ag–based community, and with about 200 people living there, taxes can be a huge issue.
Officials have to prioritize and be careful when dividing money, especially while maintaining infrastructure. Adding more homes in a community like this not only brings in people, but it gives the economy a boost, even if it's just a little.
"There's property that didn't have that much of a tax base on it," said village board chair Terry Wortman. "Now of course there's more of a tax base on the property so that all helps our tax base."
Officials say that the housing is filling a need for the community, and plenty of people to rent to.
