April is Child Abuse Awareness Month


In Nebraska, there were over 30,000 calls to reportchild abuse in just one year, 2011. About half of those were substantiated. Over 5000 children were involved in those calls where a problem was found.

Kids Count is an organization that looks at four major categories torank states regarding child well-being.

  • They are education,economic well-being, health, and safety and risky behaviors.
  • Kids Count explainsthat a child's well being is linked in many ways to its state's well-being.
  • Nebraska ranks 9 of50 overall.

Nebraska is a mandatory reporting state. If you suspect a child has been subjected to child abuse or neglect, call the hotline to report the incident to authorities. The toll-free hotline number is 1-800-652-1999.
