Auditor Foley Apologizes for Remarks on Low-Income Nebraskans

State Auditor Mike Foley

Nebraska Auditor Mike Foley has apologized for his comment about low-income people and their money management skills.

Nebraska Democratic leaders were calling for an apology following Foley's speech last week at an American's for Prosperity event. They said his statement that low-income people lack money-management skills shows a lack of understanding of Nebraska residents living paycheck to paycheck.

Friday, Foley said he'd failed to choose his words carefully in a sweeping generalization and that his remark had been misinterpreted as disparaging hardworking Nebraskans. He apologized to anyone who may have found his comment hurtful.

Foley said earlier this week that the comment was taken out of context. He explained that the comment came from an hour-and-a-half speech, in which he criticized the state for the way it managed an energy-assistance program for low-income residents -- specifically, sending nearly $8 million in federal payments directly to customers, instead of their utility companies as required.
