Authorities Searching for Suspect in Shooting of Richardson County Sheriff's Deputy

HUMBOLDT, Neb. (AP) — Law enforcement agencies are combing southeast Nebraska and parts of nearby states, looking for a car carrying someone who shot a Richardson County sheriff's deputy.

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. Monday on County Road 717, a quarter mile west of U.S. Highway 75 and about 5½ miles northeast of Humboldt.

The Richardson County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Joshua Nincehelser noticed a stopped car and approached to offer aid. Nincehelser reports that the driver soon pulled a pistol and fired several times. Nincehelser returned fire and then gave chase as the car sped away.

The office says the chase stopped when Nincehelser couldn't see through his bullet-shattered windshield and realized one of his arms had been hit. He was being treated at a Lincoln hospital.

No arrests have been reported.
