A strong wind phenomenon woke residents in the McConnell subdivision south of Kearney Wednesday night.

When residents looked out their windows, what they saw was surprising -- downed trees, broken branches, missing shingles and even broken glass and power outages.

The damages were the result of a strange wind gust around 12:45 a.m.

Residents in the area described the incident as a sudden loud bang.

There was some weather activity in the area at the time but nothing severe had been reported.

The National Weather Service in Hastings says it most likely was caused by a micro burst, which is a sudden down burst of wind exceeding 60 miles per hour in the middle of the a storm.

This could explain why only one area was hit.
