Nebraska in the war. . .

      1 infantry regiment

      3 cavalry regiments

35 Nebraskans werekilled in action and another 204 died of diseases, which was typical.

One regiment wasthe 2nd Nebraska Cavalry.

Organized at Omahain October of 1862 and assigned to duties at Fort Kearney guarding thefrontier. Later ordered to Sioux City inApril of 1863 and saw action against the "Indians" in the Dakota Territory. Mustered out in December of 1863.

It is interestingto note that some who served at Fort Kearney were former Confederates who laterchanged their allegiance and were referred to as "galvanized Yankees."

One member of the 2ndNebraska was Private James Huff age 17, possibly born in Indiana.
