Many central Nebraskans were alerted with a text message saying they had received a $1,000 Target gift card. But if you clicked on the link to fill out a credit application, many Nebraskans found out they were scammed and some even had viruses on their phone.

Local officials are alerting you to make sure to check with your carrier and the place where the text message is saying you have "won" the money first before clicking on it.

"I just laughed at it because I haven't signed up for any thousand dollar prize and so I knew it was a scam and I'd imagine with Christmas being around the corner many people opened it thinking it was a free thousand dollars for those Christmas presents but immediately it said something about filling out a credit application and right there that threw red flags," said Viaero Wireless territory manager Angela Hegert.

It's a scam like any other, if it's too good to be true it probably is. There were also reports that Best Buy was mentioned in some texts instead of Target.
