Ceremony to Mark Alliance Take-Over of Carhenge Attraction

A special ceremony will be held Tuesday to mark the city of Alliance's take-over of Carhenge, a junk-car tribute to Stonehenge located near the western Nebraska city.

Friends of Carhenge, a local group which has been overseeing the site since 1994, has given the attraction to the city.

Carhenge was built in 1987 by former Alliance resident Jim Reinders and several relatives as a memorial to his father. It can be found on land the family once owned, about two miles north of Alliance.

The city council voted in August to accept the gift. It has plans to revitalize and upgrade the property.
