Cheer & Dance Tournament Draws Thousands to Grand Island

Thousands of cheer and dance team members from across the state were in Grand Island this weekend for an annual tournament.

It's the seventh year for the event, which G.I. has hosted since the beginning.
The Coach's Association puts on the event to showcase floor exercises, jazz and hip hop dancing.
Tourism officials say Grand Island benefits from events like this one.
"The restaurants, the hotels all feel it. Go out to the shopping mall. It's going to be a little bit busier this weekend, and while it may be a little inconvenient finding your parking stall, it's great for Grand Island to have events like this here," said Brad Mellema, executive director of the Grand Island/Hall County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Mellema said local businesses will see an impact right away, but it's not the only effect left on the G.I. community.
"The long lasting ones though, tax revenue and so forth, are felt later on," said Mellema.
The recently opened Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame will also benefit. Eighty percent of revenue from the championships will go to it.
