College Announces Kearney Land Purchase

Central Community College has announced a deal with the Economic Development Council of Buffalo County to purchase about 32 acres of land for a new CCC-Kearney Center.

The property is located at the northeast corner of 11th Street and 30th Avenue in Kearney, just north of land recently acquired by Kearney Public Schools.

CCC President Dr. Greg Smith says the college is planning to build a new center because it has outgrown the existing facility located at 35th and Second Avenue. He says the campus needs additional space to meet a growing demand for career and technical education and training in the Kearney area.

Smith is pleased that the property is located directly north and across the street of the site of the new Kearney High School. He said the close proximity of the learning center and high school will create opportunities for collaboration in providing career and technical training in Kearney.

CCC has tentative plans to build a new facility that has 35,000-60,000 square-feet of space, compared with the 14,234 square feet in the current CCC Kearney Center. Pending approval by the CCC Board of Governors, groundbreaking for the new CCC Kearney Center would take place in the fall of 2016.

Central Community College in recent years has set aside money for the land acquisition in its reserve general fund. The college and the CCC Foundation plan to initiate a major gifts campaign in the Kearney area to raise funds to help pay part of construction costs.

No date has been set for the campaign kick-off, but it is expected to last one to two years.
