Community Comes Together to Keep Rural Business Thriving

Keeping the local economy running is crucial in towns like Hayes Center.

With only a handful of businesses in town, community members acted when one closed its doors. They pooled their resources, got grant money, and helped make sure the community keeps going with the help of the local grocery store.

"They saw a need that may be the only way, that way they'd pool their resources together so they could keep that business going in town," said village board chair Terry Wortman. "They see a need for it in the community, they see other communities lost their businesses they may not ever get them back again so at least you have a continuous business in town."

The village board helped secure the grant, which also helped build a distribution center.
