Corn Shortage Taking Toll on Ethanol Plants Across the Country

21110878_BG1.jpg

High corn prices aren't just shutting down ethanol plants across Nebraska, 20 plants across the country have ceased production over the past year -- seven of those were in Nebraska.

The heavy, persistent drought has caused corn to become scarce and prices to rise. Many of the plants are hoping to resume operations this year, but probably will be unable to do so until August or September, when corn harvest begins.

An ethanol shortage isn't expected as there are still millions of barrels stockpiled in addition to the plants that remain open. However, many in the industry worry that another year like the last may affect those plants.
