Cozad Back In State Tournament for the First Time in 35 Years

The boys basketball state tournament begins Thursday in Lincoln and Cozad will be making their first trip to the tournament in 35 years.

The Haymakers play Wayne in the quarterfinals. One of the stars from the 1979 team was Larry Paulsen, his son Jake is the second leading scorer on the team.

"Couple weeks ago we had retro night here, I brought the net down and now the boys are going to state -- 35 years, it's exciting," said Larry Paulsen.

Jake Paulsen is excited to have support from the entire community.

"Well it means a lot, we have a great group of guys a great coach like he did, and I know it's hard to explain. It just means a lot to me and the whole town of Cozad," said Jake Paulsen.

As the team bus left Lincoln, a whole crowd of people was there to wave goodbye, shouting "Go Big C!"

"We have an excited community around us. We sold out all our big games this year. It will be fun," said Conor Young.

Cozad is trying to win their first state basketball championship since 1970.
