Defense Leads No. 10 Hastings Past No. 9 Morningside
Hastings - The Hastings College women's basketball team took on NAIA No. 9Morningside in the NAIA DII Women's Basketball Game of the Week Saturday as theBroncos defense led to the 64-55 victory at Lynn Farrell Arena while increasingits winning streak to 12.
The Broncos were able to force 26 uncharacteristic Mustang turnovers whilealso holding MC to just 30 percent shooting on the day. The last timeMorningside was held to 55 points or less was when Hastings did it back on Feb.18, 2012 when Hastings defeated the Mustangs 69-42.
The Mustangs held a 15-14 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first half whenthe Broncos began to take over. Cami Bruckman started a 11-1 run with athree-pointer followed by a lay-up from Laurel Zwiener.
After a Mustang free-throw, Abby Jackson knocked down a three of her ownfollowed by back-to-back buckets from Jamie Van Kirk and Sierra Williamson togive the Broncos a 26-16 advantage. Hastings would lead by 10 at thebreak 32-22 holding Morningside to its lowest output for a half this season.
Hastings would continue its pressure in the second half while also extendingits lead to as many as 15 points when Bruckman would connect on a bucket in thepaint as the Broncos led 48-33 with 11:11 remaining.
Morningside would continue to fight back cutting the deficit down to six at57-51 when Leann Osten would score on a lay-up after a steal.
That was as close as the Mustangs would get as the Broncos would put thegame away from the charity stripe along with a late lay-up from Bruckman.
Bruckman led the Broncos with a game high 17 points as Van Kirk added 16 andZwiener finished with 15.
Morningside was led by Allison Bachman as she finished with 14 points.
With the win, Hastings improves to 18-2 (9-2) on the year and will be backin action Wednesday Jan. 20 as Concordia comes to town with tip-off set for6:00 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena.
