Nine counties in northwest Nebraska have been declared natural disaster areas following the severe blizzard that hit earlier this month killing at least 2,200 cattle.
The U.S. Farm Service Agency announced Thursday that Dawes, Sheridan and Sioux counties have been designated as primary natural disaster areas. These counties received physical loss notification Wednesday due to the livestock lost during the freezing rain, high winds and freezing snow that accompanied the blizzard at the beginning of the month.
Additionally, qualified producers in six other bordering counties will be eligible for federal loans. Those counties include: Box Butte, Cherry, Garden, Grant, Morrill and Scotts Bluff.
Physical losses from the storm that are covered include structures, equipment and livestock. The deadline to apply for an Emergency Loan is June 30, 2014.
Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Dan Steinkruger says producers can contact their local FSA Service Center for more information on this loan and other loan programs and disaster assistance programs.
