Thunder and rain didn’t stop groups from gathering and marching for gay rights in Grand Island on Sunday evening.

President Barack Obama has declared June as National LGBT Pride Month.

Brian Whitecalf, organizer of the walk, says it’s the third year they’ve rallied to raise awareness and push for changes to Nebraska laws and policies.

“Foster parents and adoption, and for marriage equality, and employee non-discrimination, and anti-bullying, schools need to have policies that address their students who may not be heterosexual,” says Whitecalf.

The marchers carried flags and signs from the courthouse down South Locust to the Fonner Park area and back.

Local LGBT groups, support alliances and churches were all involved.
