Elevated Bacteria Levels in Platte, More Tests Needed

Authorities say moretests will be needed in order to determine how long water from the swollen PlatteRiver will pose a health risk.

The Platte has beenfilled with Colorado floodwater that contained debris, chemicals and rawsewage.

Officials with the Departmentof Environmental Quality said tests showed elevated bacteria levels in the PlatteRiver near the towns of Brady, Cozad and Overton. The levels were 10 to 15times the amount that poses a higher risk of causing an illness.

More tests must becompleted before state officials can determine how long the health risk willcontinue.
