A former fire chief has been convicted of stealing from his fire department in southeast Nebraska.
John Porter, 47, pleaded no contest on Thursday in Lancaster County District Court to charges of theft and attempted possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
Prosecutors said Porter manipulated accounts and stole more than $33,000 from November 2010 to January 2013. He has since repaid the money to the Southeast Rural Fire Department, from which he was fired last year.
Police found more than a dozen shotguns and rifles while searching Porter's home in May. Due to Porter's theft conviction in 2006, it is illegal for him to own guns.
His sentencing has been scheduled for May 22.
