An accident between a semi and a passenger vehicle on the interstate has left two people dead.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 74-year-old Bruce McPhail and his wife 76-year-old Ruth McPhail, both of Ontario, Canada, died when the vehicle they were driving was struck by a semi.

The collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 80 about four miles west of the Overton exit. Authorities say the westbound semi crossed the median and stuck the eastbound Nissan Murano, which was pulling a camper.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger in the semi were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and have since been released.

      The accident remains under investigation.

Officers want to take this chance to remind motorists to use extreme caution on the highway.

"With the summer travel going on now throughout the state we're just advising people to always remember to wear their seatbelt, maintain a safe speed, not go over speed limit and just make sure the vehicle is in good working condition," said Nebraska State Patrol trooper Matt Alm. "Check it over, make sure you're taking breaks appropriately, as well as not use your phone and other distractions that can arise as you are traveling -- texting and driving, things like that."
