      Fire Halts Interstate 80 Traffic Near Hampton

      A fire that caused dangerous drivingconditions on Interstate 80 Tuesday may have started almost a week ago.

      Hampton Fire Chief Steve Arndt said hethinks a Hamilton County fire rekindled from a burn permit issued on Thursday.

      It burned 100 acres of corn field andgrass along I-80 south of Hampton.

      Arndt said it started a quarter of amile north of 10th and U roads.

      Hampton Fire was called in shortlyafter 1:00 p.m.

      Arndt said his department could havehandled the fire had it not been for the wind.

      Henderson and Aurora Fire were calledin to help.

      The Nebraska State Patrol and HamiltonCounty Sheriff's Office also helped control traffic on the interstate, stoppedbecause of heavy smoke.

      The National Weather Service hasissued a High Wind Watch for Thursday.

      Experts say now is the time to checkany burns you've started in the past several days and make sure they're completelyout.
