Former Corrections Staff Member Arrested for Sexual Assault of Inmate

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says a former staff member at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with an inmate.

Michael Weichman, 46, was arrested Wednesday by the Nebraska State Patrol. He was taken to the Hamilton County Jail on charges of first degree sexual abuse of an inmate.

Weichman resigned from his position as maintenance specialist at the women's prison in York on May 19 after being suspended without pay on May 5.

A court document says Weichman denied the allegation. He described his relationship with the 38-year-old inmate as playful but not sexual. She had been assigned to do maintenance work while serving time for child abuse resulting in death.

NDCS officials say they have zero tolerance for staff sexual relationships with inmates and the department is committed to complying with all state laws and federal standards relative to sexual contact between staff and inmates.

“This agency places great importance on integrity and ethical behavior. Staff members have a responsibility to be professional with inmates at all times” said Director Michael Kenney. “This behavior will not be tolerated.”
