Fremont to Consider Amendment to Law Impacting Some Immigrants' Ability to Find a Home

The Fremont City Council is set to look at a proposed amendment to a voter-approved ordinance that bans hiring or renting to people who can't prove they are in the country legally.

The amended ordinance would remove the provisions of the city's ban on renting to people who aren't in the U.S. legally.

The proposal, prepared by City Attorney Paul Payne, would remove sections requiring occupancy permits and enforcement of other housing provisions.

Payne says council member Todd Hoppe asked him to prepare the proposal, which is on the council's agenda for Tuesday.

Fremont voters approved a measure in 2010.
