Fundraiser Aims To Help Build New Show Arena At Sherman County Fairgrounds

A county says they've outgrown a fair building - and now the community is stepping in to help. Those Sherman County residents raising money Saturday night to build a new show arena at the fairgrounds. The current arena was built in the late 70's.. Ag officials saw a need for a new facility due to lack of space and increased safety issues during livestock shows at the county fair. "Parents are showing, they've got young kids at their side and when you're bringing livestock in you're so packed in that the animals are walking past the kids, the little kids going into the ring," said Sherman County Ag Society's Rick Kusek. "We build this new building we'll have more space."Event committee members say just as important is to support future generations of the ag community. "I truly believe in 4-H and FFA and all that's vitally important, and I don't want to, it'll continue," said event committee member Carrie Hurlburt. "I mean, I have nieces and nephews that are young that are getting involved in it and they're going to come show here because this is where we all show as a family and I think that's important."The new facility will be built adjacent to the current one, will include handicapped accessibility and a safe play area for kids, and will be used for other events besides the fair. Officials hope to start on the new show arena this fall.
