Gering Man Gets Prison for Child Sexual Assault Cases

GERING, Neb. (AP) -- A 20-year-old Gering man has been given eight to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting two girls, 12 and 14 years old.

Marco Garcia had pleaded no contest to two counts of sexual assault of a minor. Another count was dropped in exchange for his pleas. Garcia was sentenced last week to four to eight years on each count, to be served consecutively.

A friend of one of the girls had told a school counselor that she feared that Garcia was taking advantage of her friend. Gering police later learned that the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Department was investigating Garcia on a report that he'd had sex with another underage girl.

Under Nebraska law, people 19 and over cannot have sexual contact with people under 16.
