Gering Schools with Doors Locked After Threats of Shooting

As a precaution several schools in the Gering area will heighten security Friday after law enforcement officials said a former student threatened a "shooting rampage."

Officials are trying to locate a former student of Valts Alternative school, who made threats last spring to go on a shooting rampage Dec. 21, for the "end of the world."

A teacher reported the threat Wednesday prompting Gering Public Schools, Community Christian School and the Valts Alternative school to lock their doors Friday.

These are the only schools in the area that are still open.

School officials say the lockdown is a precaution. The doors will be locked once the students are inside, and permission will be required to enter the building after that time. There will also be a heavier police presence at the schools.
