Gov. Heineman Encourages Nebraskans to Join Statewide Volunteering Initiative


Gov. Dave Heineman and first lady Sally Ganem are encouraging all Nebraskans to join in on the 2013 ServeNebraska Week of Service taking place April 22-28.

The Week of Service gives Nebraskans the chance to volunteer in their communities.

According to the recent Volunteering in America Report, Nebraskaranks in the top 10 in volunteerism among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. In2011, 36.7 percent of Nebraska residents volunteered. They donated 49.3 millionhours of service worth $1.2 billion.

As part of ServeNebraska, volunteer ambassadors will be available in every county to suggest volunteer opportunities.

Heineman and his wife are serving as honorarychampions for the Week of Service. The first lady is a ServeNebraska volunteercommissioner and serves as honorary chair.

"Volunteerism in our state is onething that sets Nebraska apart," said Ganem. "Nebraskans are quick to step up to help others.Dave and I are honored to be a part of this inaugural effort to encourageeveryone in the state to lend a hand."
