Grand Island's open burning period that wasscheduled for Oct. 14-27 has been canceled because of the high fire riskassociated with current severe drought conditions.
Fire Chief Cory Schmidt said, "The GrandIsland Fire Department understands that many citizens rely on the open burningperiod to dispose of yard waste, unfortunately the risk is currently extremelyhigh and safety would be greatly comprised if it were allowed at this time."
Historically, the Grand Island Fire Department lifts the open burning ban twicea year for residents to burn leaves and brush where no nuisance or hazard iscreated.
Residents areencouraged however to take advantage of the free disposal service of tree limbs andbranches, grass, and leaves offered at the Yard Waste Site.
The Yard Waste Site is located on Monitor Road and boarders the TransferStation, 5050 W. Old Potash Highway, to the east. The Yard Waste Site is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. andSaturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
