District Court Judge James Livingston, of Grand Island has announced plans to retire from his position on October 1.

Livingston has held the position in the 9th Judicial District, which serves Hall and Buffalo counties since July 1992.

He has been an active member of the Nebraska District Judges Association as both a chairperson and committee member and until recently had served as chairman of the Legislative Committee.

“It has been my honor to serve the citizens of Nebraska and in particular the Ninth Judicial District for over 22 years,” Livingston said in his letter to Gov. Dave Heineman.

Following Livingston's retirement, the Judicial Resources Commission must meet to determine if his retirement creates a vacancy based on judicial workload statistics.
