A Grand Island family makes a special request to help make their son's birthday one to remember. Their 22-year-old son, Daniel, has Quad Cerebral Palsy, Scoliosis, Osteoporosis, among other medical issues.
They're hoping to expand his love of collecting t–shirts so he can share his passion with others.
"It's nice to know that just him smiling and being alive just affects so many people," said Daniel's mom, Lesa Thornton. "To feel important since he can't do those sports and events and things."
Daniel Thornton's collection of newly mailed t–shirts has grown to already more than a dozen, even including some from NFL teams.
Lesa started asking for t–shirts just before Christmas, in hopes of making the quilt in time for Daniel's birthday at the end of May.
"It'll be something that'll be a lasting memory for him when he's having a really hard time. There are times when we do end up in the hospital for just having a really hard time of it, that way he can take it with him and show everybody," Thornton added.
The Thornton family hopes to gather as many t-shirts to make a quilt, and possibly some curtains.
"It's something Danny gets to do and it makes him smile," said Daniel's dad Mike Thornton. "He's got a wonderful smile."
They wish to have all their t–shirts in time to finish the quilt by May 26 for their son's 23rd birthday.
