Mayor Jay Vavricek has decided who he will be recommending for Grand Island public works director at the next city council meeting.
John Collins, of Baton Rouge, La., will be recommended Feb. 12 for the position, which he has actually already held. Collins worked as the city's public works director from March 2011 until July 2012.
The mayor says the fact that he has already worked with the city is one of the reasons he decided to recommend Collins.
Vavricek said, "John is uniquely qualified to serve as PublicWorks Director. Of those who applied for the position, John was clearly themost qualified and with the most experience. Unlike no othercandidate, his previous employment in the City gives added confidenceto know he will successfully carry out the department's manyresponsibilities in service to the people of GrandIsland."
During his time in Grand Island, Collins helped to implement the Downtown QuietZone, develop the Wastewater Treatment Plant improvement plan, update adewatering feasibility study, and lead many other projects.
Before coming to Grand Island Collins spent over 25 years serving in various statewide engineering and management positions for the State of Louisiana Department of Transportation.
Collins' official start date will be set after the appointment is approved by the city council.
