Grand Island's Downtown Getting A Historical Face Lift

Grand Island - The city of Grand Island Public Works Department has announced that the newly installed historical lights in the Downtown Grand Island near Kaufmann will soon be lit.

The lighting installation was part of the Third and Wheeler Streets Historical Lighting Project. This project will construct 20 historical street lights one block west, one block east, and one-half block south of the Kaufmann Plaza at 3rd Street and Wheeler Avenue.

The plan is to revitalize and preserve historical Downtown Grand Island while also providing good light for people and motorists in the area. The design of the street lighting poles and luminaires has been made to complement the other historical lights located in Grand Island’s Downtown.

It isn’t just the lights that are getting a lift. The brick paver strip along the public sidewalk in the project corridor will also be replaced to upgrade walkway conditions and embellish the historical appearance.

Mid Plains Power began work on the project on April 7. New lighting poles have been installed on the north side of Third Street. The lights are planned to be energized and operational on Wednesday, May 7.Work will begin soon on the south side of Third Street with the removal of the existing lighting poles.
