Hastings YMCA Kicks off 2013 Campaign
The Hastings Family YMCA launched their annual campaign on Tuesday, October 1. The campaign aims to ensure that everyone in Hastings has access to vital community programs and resources that support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
"Throughout Hastings, countless people know the "the Y", but there's so much more to our Y than one might think," said executive director Michael Krings. "The Y is more than a gym. It's a cause. As a charity, we're dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation's health and well-being, and giving back and providing support to our neighbors."
This year, the Hastings Family YMCA hopes to raise $110,000. Funds raised will support the scholarship and Active Over 80 program, along with the other vital services provided by the Y.
Last year, charitable gifts from YMCA donors made it possible for the Y to provide $107,210 in scholarships to low income children and families enabling them to take advantage of the critical programs and services provided by the Y. The Hastings Y also provided more than $50,000 in facilities and services to other non-profits in the community, helping them do what they do as well.
Krings said the money goes to many free programs like free memberships for the elderly, or some help pay for swimming lessons and after school programs.
"The reality is as we stand here 35.7 percent of all Americans are obese and kids and adults are dealing with disease we've never dealt with before," Krings said, adding that many obstacles are related to lifestyle decisions and financial challenges.
