Hastings YWCA Receives Grant for Youth Summer Art Classes

A summer program gets a financial boost to help kids foster their creativity.

The Nebraska Arts Council awarded $1,500 to the Adams County YWCA to fund four art classes in July.

It's the second year of the program, ranging from photography to glass etching.

Officials say kids want programs like these, especially in the age of budget cuts.

"I know that some of these schools in town have had to do that, they've had to cut some of the budget, they don't have P.E. necessarily," said YWCA Community Educator Laura Stutte. "But art is definitely important and it's great to see the kids excited about it, not only do they learn something but they're having fun at the same time."

Classes include photography, painting, glass etching and pottery. Officials hope to expand this program in the future.
