Heineman Named Advocate of the Year by Veterans Group
The National Association of State Directors ofVeterans Affairs awarded Gov. Dave Heineman with the honor of being named "Advocate of the Year" for what he has done on behalf of those currently serving in the military, veterans and their families.
The association made the announcement in February at a conference of state VA directors, but presented the governor his award Friday.
The association's president, Jim Willis spoke of the governor's unwavering support to the men and women of the armed forces and their families when announcing the honor.
NASDVA specifically pointed to Heineman's involvement in publicizing the state's"Not One More Life!" bumper sticker campaign that brings public awareness tothe growing problem of military and veteran suicides. State VA directors alsocredited Heineman for taking a personal interest in promoting the U.S.Chamber of Commerce "Hiring Our Heroes" program; a national initiative thatencourages employers to hire veterans.
The association also honored Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.
