Helicopter Base Boosts GI's Airport

As the National Guard's helicopter mission has grown in central Nebraska, so too has the airport it operates at. The Nebraska Army National Guard is located on the east side of the Central Nebraska Regional Airport.
For the first few years, the guard worked at an airport hangar while building a $20 million facility of its own.
Airport Director Mike Olson says successful airports often have three things -- a business park, increasing passenger counts, and a military presence.
Grand Island has all three.
Olson said, "I would like to put us in that category of an airport that weathered the storm, economic downturn since 2008 because of the diversity of having good tenants." The airport is planning a new terminal, which along with the new guard training center will add tens of millions of dollars in new construction.
