Despite recent rains, drought conditions in continue to plague many in portions of the Midwest, including horse owners.

Some Kansas horse owners have been forced to look for new homes for their animals because they can't afford the high cost of hay.

Drought conditions over the past three years have left a huge impact on the region's hay supply. The price for large round bales went from $35 to $40 in 2011 to $115 to $120 last year. The current price sits around $40 to $60 a bale.

Careen Cain, founder of Shooting Star Equine Rescue, says many people don't realize just how much hay a horse really needs.

She says she hears five to 10 times a month from people who can no longer afford to feed their horses.
