Hundreds of Teams Participate in Tourney to Fund Local Athletics

Hundreds of teams were in Grand Island this weekend for a tournament benefiting athletes that play there all year long.

It's the 23rd annual Hoops Mania Youth Basketball tournament.

Just over 200 teams participated with nearly 20 more on a waiting list.

Organizers said they came from as far as Sidney and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The thousands of dollars raised go to support everything from swimming to track at Grand Island Senior High.

"It's our major fundraiser and our student athletes realize that if these things didn't exist some of our programs would not exist in our building either," said co-chair Tim Higgins.

Higgins estimated that about 200 volunteers work to put on the two-day tournament.
