Family Matters: The Get Along Jar

If your New Year's resolutions include more family togetherness without the bickering, this simple DIY project may be able to help.

Heather Riggleman says the project is as simple as writing out consequences on popsicle sticks. Every time the kids start arguing, simply have them choose a stick and do whatever it says.

This takes the pressure off parents who would normally have to come up with a consequence on the fly or even in anger, and it puts the kids in control.

All that is needed to make the Get Along Jar is:

  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Labels
  • A writing utensil
  • Clean, non-sharp can or mason jar

Ideas for the sticks include:

  • Take out the trash together
  • Read a story to the other person
  • Say three nice things about the other person
  • Set table together
