Kansas House Approves Bill to Strengthen Protections in Safe Haven Law
The Kansas House has approved a bill aimed at strengtheningprotections for parents who leave their newborns at a safe haven location.
The current law allows parents to leave a baby less than 45days old at a safe haven location -- such as a hospital or fire station -- without being prosecuted.
The proposed measure would help parents to remainanonymous except for circumstances when child abuse is suspected.
The bill was proposed partly in response to a case in Wichita, where a mother who abandoned her child at a hospital was publiclyidentified by police.
