A Kearney man responsible for allowing an infant to drop to the ground from six feet up while holding an infant car seat over his head has been given a year of probation.

Nicholas Bailey, 19, had pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge of negligent child abuse.

A court affidavit says Bailey, the mother of 4-month-old Dallas Pettit and another man had gone to Hilltop Mall last may when Bailey grabbed the car seat with the child still in it and ran from the car up to the mall sidewalk. Bailey then raised the car seat above his head and the child fell out, because he wasn't buckled in.

Doctors later determined the little boy had suffered a skull fracture and had bleeding on the brain.
