L-R: Program Support Director Roger Meeks presents Multi-Family Housing Specialist David Willis with the Heartland Award trophy.

A Kearney man has been named as the recipient of the first USDA Rural Development Heartland Award.

David Willis, Multi Family Housing specialist for the Kearney Rural Development office, was nominated for the award by fellow employees for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Willis is the first recipient of the Heartland Award. USDA Rural Development State Director Maxine Moul said about the award, "We have named this the Heartland Award because the employees who will be recognized are at the Heart of our Team at USDA Rural Development."

Moul said Willis earned the award by assisting a fellow employee who was on maternity leave. She said, "This is an excellent illustration of the effort of teamwork."

A new award winner will be selected each month and a traveling trophy will transfer from honoree to honoree.
