Law Makers Look Ahead to Immigration Reform
The healthcare battlehas taken center stage this week but some lawmakers are looking ahead to otheragenda items.
House Speaker John Boehnersaid he's hopeful the house can act this year on immigration legislation asrepublicans privately discuss possible steps to change the current system.
Boehner said Wednesdaythat immigration is an issue that needs to be addressed.
The White House alsohopes immigration will be a key topic in the near future.
Press Secretary JayCarney said "there was a lot of important work that was achieved in thatcomprehensive bill that passed the senate that meets the president's criteriaand he believes that there's a bipartisan majority in the House and probably asignificant one that would support that similar comprehensive approach."
The senate passed acomprehensive bill in June that would provide a path to citizenship for the 11-millionimmigrants living here illegally and tighten border security.
However, the bill hasstalled in the house as Tea Party republicans and other conservatives haveopposed the measure.
