A local organization is celebrating a milestone, and making plans to keep going as they don't plan on stopping any time soon.

The Lexington Area United Way is kicking off its 40th year of service and beginning a new fundraising campaign, during a business after-hours celebration.

The organization started in 1974, and today, it serves both Dawson and Gosper counties.

It may be one of the smaller United Way organizations, but it is has been seeing an increase in funding.

"It's a good thing in the fact that they're more educated and know what resources are out there to help them," said Executive Director Dawn Holbein. "It's unfortunate that any of us do need help, but from time to time you just don't know what life is gonna throw at you."

As with the past 39 years of services, officials are committed to keeping the legacy of fundraising and volunteering alive.

"The most important thing is that they say it takes a village to raise a child. I think it takes a community to raise a community, and you know, we're all in it together, so we need to help out our fellow neighbor, our fellow friends and family, and lend a hand," Holbein added.

This year's fundraising goal is $104,040, which will help local programs ranging from adult basic education to Crime Stoppers.
