Paper, rulers, and pencils are basic items necessary for children's education. Saturday morning, Lexington's Community Action program supplied those basic needs along with backpacks, as a way for kids to feel confident on their first day.
"I think to us it's kinda one of the greatest rewards to know the children are starting school when they're supposed to," said Community Action's Martha Draskovic. "And they're not staying at home just because they don't have that backpack or that school supply needed to feel like they're fitting in to their classroom."
There were 300 backpacks available for local students.
Multiple community organizations and businesses helped donate supplies for the program.
