Lincoln Highway Centennial Celebration is Approaching

The official party for the Lincoln Highway centennial is nearing.

The National Lincoln Highway Association chose Kearney to host the event -- deemed by USA Today as one of the top five summer anniversary events in the country -- on June 30 through July 1.

The highway extends across the country from coast to coast in places that used to connect local farm-to-market roads. The roadway has withstood the test of time and now a celebration is being held in honor of the historic highway.

The party will begin when nearly 200 classic cars arrive from both coasts as part of the Centennial Auto Tours.

Those cars willbe joined by hundreds of antique, classic and modified cars from local andnational car clubs participating in a parade on Central Avenue and then will be put on display on The Bricks in downtown Kearney.

Following the parade, historical re-enactors,period music and food will be part of the celebration of the highway's history.

The official celebration being hosted by the Lincoln Highway Association is being held at the Great Platte River Road Archway on July 1 at 1 p.m.

Nearly 300 Kearney and area residents have volunteered to helpout with the event, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Kearney.
