Good Samaritan Hospital received a five year grant to extend its cancer research beyond just treatment.

The hospital has been doing cancer trials for 15 years, but joined the National Cancer Institute seven years ago. Their new grant will allow research to look beyond just prevention.

Officials say it's a big step forward.

"It's fantastic to be part of this and be part of the National Cancer Institute project," said Dir. of Oncology Connie Wittman. "And to be able to advance cancer research in this manner is just something again a facility our size, doesn't always get the opportunity to do that and we're really pleased to be able to do that."

The grant was awarded to Catholic Health Initiatives, which also includes Saint Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Allegiant Creighton in Omaha, and St. Elizabeth's in Lincoln.
