Long-time Nebraska Slogan Remains Front Runner for Many as Others Come and Go

“The Good Life” is a very familiar slogan for Nebraskans, one that remains strong while others have come and gone.

“Welcome to Nebraska Land, Where the West Begins” is officially the states slogan, but it was in the early 1970s when Nebraska “The Good Life” really started to pick up steam.

Over the years the tourism commission has coined many other slogans, but this particular one has held strong through the years.

"It does embody what living and working and playing in Nebraska is all about. It is the good life -- it's slower here, there's less crime, it just is a lot easier way to live and raise your kids," said Marion McDermott, executive director of the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce.

Recently the Nebraska tourism commission introduced a new slogan to promote the state: “Visit Nebraska Visit Nice.”

But some weren't so sure about the new slogan.

"Well I think “The Good Life” will always be a part of Nebraska and a part of our existence because it really does embody what it's like living here," said McDermott.

Roger Jasnoch, executive director of the Kearney Visitors Bureau said, "Nebraska’s known for its hospitality and friendly people, 'Visit Nebraska, Visit Nice.'"

And it's true. That's what tourists had to say.

"I don't think I've ever been out here when people weren't friendly."

"Wonderful people, yes definitely about the people," they said.

But change can be tough and locals of all ages had an idea of what “The Good Life” means to them.

"A lot of friendly people, the good life, it's just laid back kind of like Midwestern," said one young man.

"Good safe community and being able to work together with everyone in that community," adds another.

"Small town living" -- "Pretty much relaxed, slow paced no rush," -- "Anything that God blesses us with that we enjoy in our daily life," were all things mentioned when asked to explain why Nebraska is The Good Life.

One thing is for sure, when people drive into Nebraska we all know the first thing they'll see and that's not changing any time soon.

“The Good Life” remains at the heart of what Nebraska really is for so many and it's not likely to change anytime soon.
