Loper Grapplers Sit Second
Lopers Still in theHunt for National Title
Kearney, Neb. – Two-time defending national championNebraska-Kearney sits in second place after the first day of the NCAA WrestlingChampionships in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Lopers have scored 41.0 points and five of its sixqualifiers are still alive, including four in the semifinals.
Top-ranked Notre Dame College, wrestling in its hometown,leads the field with 44.5 points. The Falcons, who were docked three teampoints for unsportsmanlike conduct during the second session, also haveadvanced four into the semifinals but also seen four of its wrestlerseliminated.
Rounding out the top five are Central Region membersLindenwood (36.0) and St. Cloud State (35.5) with Maryville U, Mo., andOuachita Baptist, Ark., tied for fifth (33.0) OBU is another Central team.
UNK and NDC are the only schools with four wrestlers left onthe front side; a total of five schools have five individuals remaining.
Going 2-0 on Friday to reach their respective weight classsemifinals are seniors Romero Cotton (197 lbs.), Patrick Martinez (174 lbs.)and Brock Smith (165 lbs.) and sophomore Daniel DeShazer (133 lbs.). Stillalive on the backside is senior Mark Fiala (184 lbs.) with senior Brock Coutu(141 lbs.) going 1-2 today to have his season end.
Ranked No. 1 all season, Cotton (Hutchinson, Kans.)dominated Evan Rosborough of D2 newcomer Lake Erie College (Ohio) in Friday'ssecond session, building up over four minutes of riding time to win 6-4.
The familiar Tanner Kriss of Fort Hays State is Cotton'snext opponent. Over the last two years, Cotton has beaten him by scores of 9-8,9-5 and 4-3.
Second-ranked Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa and third-rankedJulian Smith of D2 newcomer McKendree U. (Ill.) are on the other side.
The fourth-ranked Martinez (Hemet, Calif.) used twotakedowns and some riding time to beat Colorado Mesa's Chester Granard, 6-2, inone of the 174 lbs. semifinal matches. Top-ranked Joey Davis of NDC, now67-0 in college, is up next.
One class lower, the eighth-ranked Smith (Gering) used atakedown and riding time to get past Kutztown's Bionojel Candelaria by a 5-4score. For the fourth time this year, Smith will face Central Oklahoma's ChrisWatson (42-3). Smith handed Watson two losses during the regular season.
It'll be a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in one 133 lbs.semifinal match tomorrow. DeShazer (Wichita, Kans.) takes on the second-rankedMichael Labry of Ashland (Ohio) after needing extra time to get by sixth-rankedDustin Stodola of Chadron State, 2-1.
DeShazer gave Stodola his first loss by using an escape inthe first tie break period. He then rode out Stodola for 30 seconds to advance.
That wasn't the most exciting match of the second sessionfor UNK as Coutu (Griswold, Conn.) was down 7-1 to Sam Hanau of Pitt-Johnstownearly in his 141 lbs. consolation first round match. Chipping away at Hanau'slead, Coutu still trailed with the clock winding down in the third period. Hemanaged to pin Hanau with about 10 seconds left to give UNK some more teampoints.
However, eighth-ranked B.J. Young of Newberry (S.C.), atwo-time national runner up, pinned Coutu in the next round.
Finally, Fiala (Seward) turned the tables on UCO's ZnickFerrell by beating him, 4-2, to stay alive. Ferrell had beaten Fiala twiceduring the regular season by a combined score of 16-7. In the third round,Fiala had three near fall points to major third-ranked Jon Vogt of McKendree,8-0.
