Low Unemployment, Job Availability Good for Kearney Economy
The unemployment rate in Nebraska is much lower than the national average, but some say what's good for those looking for work can mean a tougher time for businesses looking for qualified workers.
February's figures from the Department of Labor indicate Kearney's unemployment stands between 3.3 and 3.6 percent.
Local employment recruiters say that's good for someone looking to relocate to the area, and thanks to Kearney's growth, it's also good for businesses.
"I think when people think low unemployment they think 'We'll not be able to find anybody to fill the positions,' but we don't have that issue at all," said Associated Staffing Branch Manager Kim Herrick. "In fact, that's what we're here to do is to assist those businesses actively recruit those job spots for those new jobs."
Officials say there are jobs that match available skill sets, but it's also up to the potential employees to utilize them.
"When you go in for a job it may not be the job of your dreams to start out with, but if you stay there long enough and get some longevity, the business owner is going to take that time to train you so that you're going to get those skills to maybe carry you forward to your next position," Herrick said.
Herrick adds Kearney always has an active job pool to pull from, regardless of skills and positions available.
